Japanese artist Nozomi (nuh-zoh-mee) creates dazzling sculptures of insects, inviting viewers to take a closer look. Works like the one at right are part of an ongoing series in which the artist crafts designs inspired by beetles. The Paris-based artist combines cutting-edge technology and traditional painting techniques to create the lifelike shapes and intricate textures of the shiny specimens.

First, Nozomi examines real beetles’ forms. Then she digitally sculpts her own creatures with exaggerated textures using a digital design program. Once her designs are complete, she 3-D prints the digital illustrations. Nozomi uses a paintbrush to apply lacquer paint (a type of glossy finish) to the surface, adding glistening color and detailed texture. It’s enough to make your skin crawl!
