Straight Photography
Adams helped define photography's place in fine art
In the 20th century, Ansel Adams pioneered straight photography, which the artist described as "photographs that looked like photographs, not imitations of other art forms." To compose his photos, Adams manipulated his camera's technical settings, emphasizing lines, textures, and forms within a scene. He also cropped his photos to create distinct focal points and to create the illusion of depth in a flat picture plane.
