Jer Weann Ang talks about her career in biomedical visualization

Scholastic Art: What is your job?

Jer Weann Ang: I am a biomedical visualizer at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. I work on a team that creates science-based visuals and interactive learning experiences for medical students.

SA: Can you describe the types of visuals you make?

Jer Weann Ang

JWA: I create 3-D models of anatomy, cellular biology, and molecular biology. I also make 3-D animations and design virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences.

SA: What is the difference between AR and VR experiences?

JWA: In VR, everything the user sees and interacts with while wearing their headset has been digitally created. Students can step into different worlds, like the back of an ambulance or an operating room. With AR, a real-world environment is enhanced with digital art. Users stay grounded in their actual surroundings while interacting with digital resources.

Why might it be important for medical students to virtually learn about skull anatomy?

SA: What is your working process?

JWA: I always start with research to fully understand the science behind what we are teaching. Then I create illustrated storyboards. I use them to design the user experience and user flow, which is the plan for how a student will move from one stage to another in their learning experience.

SA: What is surprising about your job?

JWA: Many of the tools and processes I use are the same as those found in game development. You can frequently find me 3-D sculpting, animating, or doing research and planning. I’m constantly switching between creative, technical, and scientific tasks.

SA: How did you get your start?

JWA: I have my bachelor’s degree in genetics and a minor in art. I started out heavily focused on science—I didn’t find out about medical illustration until my third year of college.

SA: Is there an upcoming project you are excited about?

JWA: One of my upcoming projects involves teaching medical students how to perform a physical exam on a baby. We are creating a VR experience featuring a moving, lifelike baby so students can learn about and virtually perform infant exams. We have never done this before, so I can’t wait to see how the project turns out!

SA: Do you have advice for students interested in a career like yours?

JWA: This is a growing field for those who are interested in science or art. Take figure drawing classes because observational drawing is important in medical illustration. You’ll also need a good understanding of the fundamentals of biology, anatomy, and physiology.
