Where did you get inspiration for your self-portrait?

Prior to this, I had only done stylized self-portraits. I am always very appreciative of blunt and direct criticism. My teachers encouraged me to work on anatomy and portraiture, so I decided to try something more realistic using a grid method.

What was your working process?

For the grid method, you use larger shapes and focus on proportions, which makes it easier to ensure the work is realistic. I started by drawing a grid on my canvas and a grid on my reference image. Then I sketched the details. I tried gradient mapping by filling in cubes on my digital canvas in black and white, then using different layer functions on Photoshop to build color and value. I also wanted to make sure I captured my personality in the work, so I added the colors of my clothing and accessories and created a collage for the border.

How did you choose the color palette?

The color palette was more of a conceptual choice than an aesthetic one. I used warm tones to make it feel loving, endearing, and passionate. I am confident in myself, and I want to convey that in my work. That’s why I chose the reference photo I used—it represents who I fully am.

What do you hope this self-portrait communicates about you?

My main goal was to show myself as I truly am. In one way this piece is about my racial and physical identity—I don’t conform to traditional standards, and I’m very confident in myself. I want to inspire other people to be proud of who they are.

Do you have advice for other young artists like yourself?

Remember that art is communication—it’s a form of speaking to others.
