When did you start making art?

I’ve been creating art since I was young, maybe around 5 years old. I always enjoyed drawing, specifically anything with animals or insects.

Is there a medium you prefer to use?

Although I usually prefer drawing, I’m also learning glassblowing and ceramics in school now.

Where did you get the inspiration for Echoes of a Submerged World?

I wanted to focus on marine biology, which is what I study in school. We recently learned about worsening environmental problems across the world, and I thought it would be interesting to explore these issues through my art. I wanted to capture these pressing issues in something eye-catching with vivid details and colors.

What was it like to work on this piece?

It took me a while to create this painting because it was initially two different visual ideas that I wanted to combine into one. I wanted to create an underwater city while also accurately capturing the marine life that could be found there.

How did you decide which colors would best convey your ideas?

I mainly focused on the natural colors of the species. I started with the colors of the sea slug then added species with the most colorful pinks and oranges to add contrast. I wanted to capture the different types of beauty in nature.

Do you have advice for young artists?

Try to have a clear understanding of what you want to show in your work. For example, I have always been really interested in animals and marine biology. I started exploring both in my art when I was young, and it’s been a consistent subject for me as I’ve evolved as an artist. It’s important to find what you like and how you like to express ideas.

Sean received a Gold Medal for his painting in the 2025 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
