Vivian Orta, 20, explores identity and family history in her art. She’s a graduate of the George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Baltimore, Maryland. She’s currently majoring in art and minoring in science education at the University of California, Los Angeles.
What story are you telling in Desconectada, above?
The title is the Spanish feminine word for “disconnected.” The word represents me and my experience as a Chicana, or Mexican American. My family has been in the U.S. for generations, and I grew up not having a strong connection to Mexican culture.
