Art supplies can be found anywhere and everywhere: your backyard, your kitchen, even in the bag of old clothing you’re planning to throw away. British artist Ian Berry gives new life to abandoned blue jeans, using them to create complex works of art. His landscapes, cityscapes, and portraits are so meticulously crafted that they might look like oil paintings to the casual observer. But a closer look reveals that they are sculptural.

Berry creates each image using only scissors, glue, and layers of denim. In Behind Closed Doors, above, the artist uses varied shades of denim to create the effect of light shining through an open doorway, casting a luminous sheen on the tile floor.

Many discarded garments end up in landfills. Berry has found an inventive way to upcycle items that might otherwise go to waste and harm the planet. What materials can you find around your home to use in your artwork?
