This summer, the Olympic Games are in Tokyo, Japan. From 1912 to 1948, artists competed in the Olympics for medals in art categories. Today, organizers commission artists to make posters for the events. Taku Satoh (tah-koo sah-toh) designed the poster above. Satoh includes five rings in his hand-drawn poster, echoing the Olympic symbol. Arrows sweep across the work, meeting in the negative space in the center. Can you guess what the negative space represents?

Note: As Scholastic Art went to press, there was discussion that the 2020 Olympic Games might be postponed or even canceled due to COVID-19, but no decision had yet been made. COVID-19 is a coronavirus that causes flu-like symptoms.
