London-based artist Andrew Rae believes that there is more to our smartphones than meets the eye. Inspired by fantastical creatures and driven by today’s privacy concerns, Rae digitally illustrates whimsical scenarios on photos of phone-immersed pedestrians.

To make the work above, part of his Phone Buddies series, Rae digitally draws green tentacles bursting from the subject’s phone screen. The tentacles curl around the man’s face and arm, though he appears unfazed by the monster. Both charming and chilling, Rae’s work suggests that our phones contain technology we don’t yet fully understand and, if we’re not careful they could eat us alive!
