Artist Luke Rasmussen loves rock climbing and photography. So he discovered a way to combine both passions. He takes experimental photos that celebrate rock climbing’s intricate skills and photography’s artistic possibilities.

Rasmussen created the rainbow-colored trail up a rock formation outside Los Angeles in Passing the Torch, right. He uses a long-exposure photography technique. He sets up his camera with its shutter open, allowing it to photograph longer periods of time instead of a single moment. Then he straps colorful LED lights to himself and climbs the vertical rock. The result is a photo featuring a colorful trail of light, capturing Rasmussen’s climbup and down the mountainous terrain.

“I wanted to use climbing as my medium,” the artist says, “. . . to freeze time in a moment.”
