Art of the Future
These contemporary artists use STEAM to bring their ideas to life
For hundreds of years, artists relied on paint and canvas, clay, or stone to express their ideas. Today, contemporary artists incorporate science, technology, engineering, and math into their work. In Tony Oursler’s video series A*gR_3, he explores facial-recognition software to make a statement about technology’s role in our lives. Amy Karle uses her knowledge of human anatomy and textiles to create her new media works, including Breathe. In Cai Guo-Qiang’s Sky Ladder, the artist employs his knowledge of chemistry to construct an ephemeral sculpture that reaches to the sky.
