This article introduces Zaha Hadid’s Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Iraqi-British architect and her team embraced STEAM concepts to develop this feat of nontraditional architecture. Hadid had to consider gravity when developing the structure’s organic form. She and her team used computers to create complex renderings that showed how the center would be constructed. Engineers identified the most effective structure and materials to bring Hadid’s design to life. Artists collaborated with engineers to create the building’s unified design. And finally, the team worked with an acoustic specialist to calculate how to contour the surfaces of the center’s auditorium.
