Picturesque Pies
Courtesy of Lauren Ko/Lokokitchen.
How does Ko use geometric shapes in her pie designs?
As a child, you were probably told not to play with your food. But artist Lauren Ko makes art doing just that. Two years ago, Ko was an executive assistant without any professional baking experience. Then she saw artistic potential in an unconventional material: pie! Her pies are complex and eye-catching. She gets her inspiration from a variety of sources, including bathroom tiles and textiles.
To make each design, Ko cuts a variety of bright seasonal fruit into geometric shapes. Then she arranges the sliced fruit into intricate patterns on the pie’s surface. Can you guess which fruits Ko uses to make the pies above? Because Ko devotes so much time to each pie, she doesn’t sell them. But her designs bring a colorful new twist to the possibilities of edible art.
