Polynesia is a group of more than 1,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean. For centuries, native people have developed their own religions, languages, and art forms throughout these territories. People settled Hawaii between the first and 11th centuries. Artists created works for use in celebrations and religious ceremonies. An artist carved a block of wood into a stylized representation of the Hawaiian god of war. Important citizens wore capes and helmets that craftspeople made with feathers from rare birds. They believed the featherwork garments’ bright colors and geometric patterns symbolized the wearer’s importance.
