Can you spot the figure in this dramatic photograph?

Scholastic Art: What is your job?

Brittany Schones: I am an aerial photographer. I take photographs and videos for clients all over New England using a drone. My clients include real estate agents, event organizers, and people getting married or hosting reunions. Recently I even filmed a music video!

SA: What is the process for a project?

BS: First, I meet with the client and explore the site. This helps me see what might be interesting to capture in a photograph—such as a cool-looking tree, a beautiful hill, or an interesting building—and what angle I might want to approach those things from. I take the photos and film video on the day of the shoot, and then back at my studio, I edit the material to create a package for the client.

Brittany Schones saw an opportunity to build her own aerial photography business.

SA: What does editing involve?

BS: Mostly, I try to leave my photos untouched. But sometimes I might emphasize certain colors or increase definition to achieve a certain result.

SA: How did you get your job?

BS: I created the job for myself! I studied science in college but decided it wasn’t for me. I really wanted to have my own business. I knew drone photography was a new technology that was becoming more popular. I did some research and found out that no one offered the service near where I live. So I bought a drone and started experimenting. Then I got my Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification to be a drone pilot. After months of practicing and experimenting, I booked my first photo shoot.

SA: How did it feel to book that shoot?

BS: It felt like an affirmation that I had created something for myself, and I knew it was only the beginning. I was nervous, but the job went really well. The real estate agent who hired me is still my client and we still work together frequently.

SA: What is challenging about your job?

BS: The weather can be a big challenge! If it is cloudy, windy, or raining, I usually have to reschedule a shoot.

SA: What do you love about your job?

BS: I love that I get to see things that other people don’t get to see. Anybody can see things from eye level. But to rise above a treeline or higher—it simply takes your breath away!
