Modern Gothic
Describe the Gothic details in Dump Truck.
Belgian artist Wim Delvoye (whim del-VWAH) combines modern machinery and Gothic patterns in Dump Truck. He finds inspiration in the pointed arches and ornate carvings of Gothic architecture, which emerged in Europe during the 12th century.
Before Delvoye makes full-size sculptures like Dump Truck, which is more than 27 feet long and 9 feet high, he creates small-scale models. Mathematicians help Delvoye create 3-D designs. Then he uses lasers to cut the intricate, lacelike patterns in the steel. It can take up to a year to complete a work like Dump Truck. Then the metal rusts, creating a warm finish.
