Every two years, Venice, a city in Italy, hosts an international art exhibition called the Venice Biennale (bee-en-AHL-eh). Artists from around the world show their work in a large building called the Arsenale. Claudia Fontes (FOHN-ts), the artist representing Argentina, created a monumental sculpture that makes a statement about the building’s history.

People needed horses’ strength to construct the Arsenale, built beginning in the 12th century. In the sculpture, a woman pets a larger-than-life horse. Fontes uses scale to demonstrate the animal’s importance in human history.
She hopes the white marble dust and resin work will invite viewers to pause and consider the relationship between horses and humans.
