Twisting Illusion
How does Minha create the illusion of infinity in this installation?
Anew sculpture outside a hotel in South Korea is sure to make visitors feel as though they’ve made an electrifying entrance. South Korean new-media artist Minha Yang (mihn-hah yahng) constructed the work, titled Accumulation, using large square forms. Each square sits on the ground at a slightly different angle from the one before it. Yang lines the interior edges of the forms with LED lights. A continuous sequence of digital patterns and colors illuminates the interior of each square, creating a glowing tunnel that appears to move and transform.
The twisted geometric shape combined with the hypnotic digital effects creates the illusion of infinity. The artist hopes viewers will experience the “accumulation of time” as they walk through the installation.
