Scale and Space
These artists take sculpture to new heights and unexpected places
Scale and space are two of a sculptor's most important tools. An artwork's location and relative size can affect its meaning. In Mask III, Ron Mueck embraces a monumental scale to sculpt a hyperrealistic representation of a face. In his installation Heritage, Cai Guo-Qiang fabricates a utopian version of the natural world in an ordinary art gallery. In his site-specific work Seven Magic Mountains, Ugo Rondinone builds rock formations that invite the viewer to think about the surrounding Nevada desert and nearby city.
