The Art of the Ancient Maya
Stories and myths hide within these realistic artworks
This article introduces the artwork of the Maya, an ancient civilization that flourished from 250 to 900 A.D.. The realistic details in Mayan art depict the stories, sports, gods, and rulers the Maya valued most. Mayan artists crafted burial masks for wealthy rulers, in an effort to ensure their status in the afterlife. An artist known today as the Metropolitan Master painted an intricate scene that shows a narrative about the Mayan rain god. A written language of glyphs allows experts to interpret relief carvings and other works, illuminating details about this ancient civilization.
