Street Snaps
How does the artist use an unusual point of view in her photographs?
Street vendors in Hanoi (hah-NOY), Vietnam, ride their bikes throughout the city selling colorful fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Dutch artist Loes Heerink (LOOs hehr-ehnk) created a series of photographs that captures this daily routine.
Early each morning, the vendors, who are mostly women, load their bikes with goods. Heerink waited on local bridges to photograph the women as they passed below her. The project took many months and a lot of patience. Sometimes the artist spent several hours waiting for a single vendor to pass by.
Heerink plans to publish a book of her photographs, which she believes will offer insights into the vendors’ lives. With their colorful produce carefully organized in their bike baskets, street vendors in Hanoi “create little pieces of art every day,” she explains.
