David Moreno (moh-REHN-oh) creates sculptures that look like pencil drawings. “[I’m] trying to draw sculptures,” he explains. The Spanish artist begins with a line drawing. Then he reinterprets it in three dimensions using steel rods, piano strings, and paint. Moreno frequently chooses geometric subjects, like the row of houses in this example. He emphasizes shape by arranging his materials in an overlapping pattern. The horizontal and diagonal rods slice across the vertical ones, defining the scene. This technique creates depth and dimension that’s similar to the original pencil sketch.
