Figure of Light
How does this sculpture change throughout the day?
Near an Australian beach, a sculpture seems to vanish into the horizon as the daylight changes. To make the work, Italian artist Alessandra Rossi (ah-les-SAHN-drah ROH-see) used acrylic that changes color with the light. The sculptor wanted to bring attention to the coral in the nearby Great Barrier Reef. Coral is made up of the skeletons of tiny animals that live on the seafloor. When stressed, such as by changes in light or temperature, it turns white. This phenomenon, called coral bleaching, occurred in Australia’s reefs last year due to warming ocean temperatures. The artist hopes the sculpture will help people think about coral bleaching as they watch it change color.
