Crosswalk Geometry
How does Guelov reinvent a commonplace design?
Artist Christo Guelov (GUH-lof) reimagines things that others might not even notice. “I try to intervene in usual places in an unusual manner,” he explains.
Case in point: The crosswalk. The Bulgarian-born artist transformed 13 crosswalks in Madrid, Spain, into colorful designs. Guelov used simple geometric shapes to enhance the existing zebra-stripe pattern. As a universal symbol, the crosswalk “seemed an appropriate place to add pinches of color,” he says.
The artist hopes his work will help pedestrians and drivers focus on the road and look more closely at the world around them. “Opening up new horizons for human experience has always been [my] main source of creative energy,” Guelov notes.
