Rocking Skateboards
How does the artist transform skateboards into guitars?
San Francisco-based artist Nick Pourfard makes a living combining his two passions: skateboarding and playing music. The 22-year-old student builds guitars out of skateboards. Pourfard taught himself woodworking when he was 18 years old by watching YouTube videos, reading, and experimenting. “I knew I wanted to build a guitar, but I didn’t want to make something I could already buy,” Pourfard told Scholastic Art.
Pourfard handcrafts each guitar from used or broken skateboard decks. First, he strips the grip tape off the wooden decks. He then glues several boards together. He uses a template to trace the shape of a guitar before cutting the layers of wood. “A unique color pattern emerges,” Pourfard explains. “No paint is added to achieve these colors.” Each guitar is one of a kind.
