Impressionists used gestures to convey meaning in their work. In his painting Dance at Bougival, Pierre-Auguste Renoir emphasizes his female subject’s shy downward gaze by framing her face with a bright red bonnet. He blurs the surrounding scene to indicate the excitement of the dance. Mary Cassatt’s Little Girl in a Blue Armchair features a child with relaxed body language and a bored facial expression. In Bathers, Gustave Caillebotte hides his subject’s face and crops the scene so it appears the diver might leap out of the edge of the painting. The gestures in these paintings provide clues about the ways in which their subjects might be responding to the world around them.
