From a distance, it looks as though this seated giant might be made of lace. But get closer and you’ll see that the 27-foot-tall sculpture is actually constructed with painted stainless- steel letters. Created by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa, the work is shown here installed in the coastal French town of Antibes. Plensa named the work Nomade, which is the French word for nomad, or wanderer. As the figure crouches, gazing toward the sea, he seems to be deep in thought. The artist explains, “Such bricks, letters . . . enable us to construct a thought.”
