Sticky Self-Portrait
How did Coupland turn his self-portrait into an interactive installation?
What do you do with ABC (already been chewed) gum? Canadian artist Douglas Coupland came up with an unexpected idea: Spit it out and stick it on his sculpture! Installed on a street in Vancouver last summer, the sculpture began as a 7-foot-high, shiny black-polyester and resin self-portrait. But the artist wanted people to interact with the sculpture. He invited them to stick wads of chewed gum on its surface, making it their own. He says, “At first the added gum looked like jewels against the black. But then we had a heat wave.” Mother Nature left her mark on the work as well, as the melting gum attracted a cloud of bees.
