Sculpture Showdown
Does one statue change the meaning of another?

A small statue called Fearless Girl is causing a big commotion in New York City. Artist Kristen Visbal recently placed her bronze statue of a determined young girl in front of the famous Charging Bull sculpture near Wall Street. It appears as if the girl is challenging the fierce-looking sculpture. Charging Bull’s creator Arturo Di Modica, says this changes the original meaning of his artwork. The artist created the sculpture to represent a “bull market” or a strong stock market. Now Di Modica is accusing the city of violating his legal rights as an artist.

Visbal installed Fearless Girl on March 7, 2017, the day before International Women’s Day. The girl with her hands on her hips and a defiant look on her face quickly became a hit with New Yorkers and tourists alike, as well as a sensation on social media. Many feel Fearless Girl symbolizes the empowerment of women. The statue was initially meant to remain for one week. But after thousands of people signed a petition, the mayor of New York City extended the statue’s permit for a year.

Di Modica argues that the city should have asked his permission before allowing Visbal to install Fearless Girl. Di Modica gifted Charging Bull to New York City in 1989, but he still owns the copyright (the exclusive right to how the work is used). The artist believes Fearless Girl exploits his work. He says the bull symbolizes strength and prosperity but that Fearless Girl makes the bull look like a villain. He has requested that Fearless Girl be removed.

What do you think? Do artists have the right to protect how their works are presented

CRAFT AN ARGUMENT
1. How has the public shown support for the Fearless Girl statue’s placement?
2. Why does Di Modica believe Fearless Girl infringes on his copyright of Charging Bull? What evidence does he give to support his argument?
3. Explain why Fearless Girl should or should not remain at its current location.

I believe that Kristen Visbal shouldn't of put the statue there because Arturo Di Modica wasn't intending for his sculpture to appear as though the bull is a villain. Kristen Visbal should of made a different sculpture to represent what she wanted to represent.

I believe that Fearless Girl should be taken down because the artist of Charging Bull had requested to remove it. Di Modica had his work placed there in New York City first, and he believes Fearless Girl puts across a message that he had not intended.

I believe the statue should stay because it represents something important, like the bull. The bull can have its own meaning when you view it by itself. Also, the artist doesn't own the area the statue is placed in.

The fearless girl should stay up because over a thousand people signed a petition for it to stay up longer than a week so now it is up for a year or might be longer

The statute shouldn't stay there because Di Modicas sculpture was there first and with the girl there it makes the art have a completely different meaning.

The public shows support for the Fearless Girl statue by signing a petition and extending the amount of time the statue will stay. They feel as if the statue is representing the strength of all women. Di Modica feels that the Fearless Girl miss interprets what his work is saying. He says that his copyright states "the exclusive right to how the work is used" which he feels is being violated. I believe the Fearless Girl should remain at its current location because it is representing something powerful and great in an original way.

The public has made this statue well known because of the meaning behind it. People love the way it makes it look as if the girl is challenging the bull and shows how woman have slowly gained back their power in this society. Di Mondica believes that the fearless girl is taking the meaning away from his statue which is supposed to symbolize "strength and prosperity". I agree that the statue should be removed or replaced because it does make the bull look like a villain and if I was and artist I would want my statue to look as I intended it to be.

I think that the sculpter or artist should have asked the artist permission before they placed it. By placing the art there they changed the whole initial point or meaning of the artwork. That would be like taking a portrait someone made and drawing a mustache on it. You can't do that to someone else's art work.

i believe it is rude to out stand some one elses art work that they worked hard on and got them fames. On the other hand the girl can show girls and woman can be anything they want and can be braive.

I don't think that it should remain there because it makes the the bull look like a bad thing instead of something good.

Public shows support for the fearless girls statue by signing a petition to keep the statue up and by putting the statue on social media, di modica infringes on this statue because it shows the bull as a villain, I don't think they should keep the statue of fearless girl up because it defeates the Bulls purpose and I think artist have the right to protect how their artwork is presented.

Public show support by signing a petition to keep the panting up for a year instead of a week. Di Monica believes that it infringes the bull to look like a. Villan. I think that they should keep girl fearless is the same spot because it's not hurting the artist and it shows girl power

I think it should stay because it shows women can be strong and women can be brave as well as men the bull shoes power and bravery and so does the girl the little girl has the right to stay where she stands to day.
