Sculpture Showdown
Does one statue change the meaning of another?

A small statue called Fearless Girl is causing a big commotion in New York City. Artist Kristen Visbal recently placed her bronze statue of a determined young girl in front of the famous Charging Bull sculpture near Wall Street. It appears as if the girl is challenging the fierce-looking sculpture. Charging Bull’s creator Arturo Di Modica, says this changes the original meaning of his artwork. The artist created the sculpture to represent a “bull market” or a strong stock market. Now Di Modica is accusing the city of violating his legal rights as an artist.

Visbal installed Fearless Girl on March 7, 2017, the day before International Women’s Day. The girl with her hands on her hips and a defiant look on her face quickly became a hit with New Yorkers and tourists alike, as well as a sensation on social media. Many feel Fearless Girl symbolizes the empowerment of women. The statue was initially meant to remain for one week. But after thousands of people signed a petition, the mayor of New York City extended the statue’s permit for a year.

Di Modica argues that the city should have asked his permission before allowing Visbal to install Fearless Girl. Di Modica gifted Charging Bull to New York City in 1989, but he still owns the copyright (the exclusive right to how the work is used). The artist believes Fearless Girl exploits his work. He says the bull symbolizes strength and prosperity but that Fearless Girl makes the bull look like a villain. He has requested that Fearless Girl be removed.

What do you think? Do artists have the right to protect how their works are presented

CRAFT AN ARGUMENT
1. How has the public shown support for the Fearless Girl statue’s placement?
2. Why does Di Modica believe Fearless Girl infringes on his copyright of Charging Bull? What evidence does he give to support his argument?
3. Explain why Fearless Girl should or should not remain at its current location.

I believe that Kristen Visbal shouldn't of put the statue there because Arturo Di Modica wasn't intending for his sculpture to appear as though the bull is a villain. Kristen Visbal should of made a different sculpture to represent what she wanted to represent.

I believe that Fearless Girl should be taken down because the artist of Charging Bull had requested to remove it. Di Modica had his work placed there in New York City first, and he believes Fearless Girl puts across a message that he had not intended.

I believe the statue should stay because it represents something important, like the bull. The bull can have its own meaning when you view it by itself. Also, the artist doesn't own the area the statue is placed in.

The fearless girl should stay up because over a thousand people signed a petition for it to stay up longer than a week so now it is up for a year or might be longer

The statute shouldn't stay there because Di Modicas sculpture was there first and with the girl there it makes the art have a completely different meaning.

The public shows support for the Fearless Girl statue by signing a petition and extending the amount of time the statue will stay. They feel as if the statue is representing the strength of all women. Di Modica feels that the Fearless Girl miss interprets what his work is saying. He says that his copyright states "the exclusive right to how the work is used" which he feels is being violated. I believe the Fearless Girl should remain at its current location because it is representing something powerful and great in an original way.

The public has made this statue well known because of the meaning behind it. People love the way it makes it look as if the girl is challenging the bull and shows how woman have slowly gained back their power in this society. Di Mondica believes that the fearless girl is taking the meaning away from his statue which is supposed to symbolize "strength and prosperity". I agree that the statue should be removed or replaced because it does make the bull look like a villain and if I was and artist I would want my statue to look as I intended it to be.

I think that the sculpter or artist should have asked the artist permission before they placed it. By placing the art there they changed the whole initial point or meaning of the artwork. That would be like taking a portrait someone made and drawing a mustache on it. You can't do that to someone else's art work.

i believe it is rude to out stand some one elses art work that they worked hard on and got them fames. On the other hand the girl can show girls and woman can be anything they want and can be braive.

I don't think that it should remain there because it makes the the bull look like a bad thing instead of something good.

Public shows support for the fearless girls statue by signing a petition to keep the statue up and by putting the statue on social media, di modica infringes on this statue because it shows the bull as a villain, I don't think they should keep the statue of fearless girl up because it defeates the Bulls purpose and I think artist have the right to protect how their artwork is presented.

Public show support by signing a petition to keep the panting up for a year instead of a week. Di Monica believes that it infringes the bull to look like a. Villan. I think that they should keep girl fearless is the same spot because it's not hurting the artist and it shows girl power

I think it should stay because it shows women can be strong and women can be brave as well as men the bull shoes power and bravery and so does the girl the little girl has the right to stay where she stands to day.

I think that Fearless Girl should stay up. Fearless Girl empowers citizens because it shows that nothing can stop you from achieving. Citizens reacted positively to Fearless Girl, they even signed a petition to keep her up for a year.

I believe that the Fearless Girl should remain with the charging bull near Wall street because their relationship has a lot of meaning. Art is meant to have many different interpretations and emotional appeals depending on the viewer. Some may still see the bull in a different way, maybe as a sign of strength as Di Modica intended. I think that it is selfish of Di Modica to want everyone to view his painting how he views it. Maybe it represents prosperity in his mind, but others have the freedom to interpret it, and as an artist he should appreciate all of the action and talk that his sculpture has brought about. The Fearless Girl statue has been very effective in motivating people to take action for what they believe in, and much of it is based on its position next to the bull.

Emily says, "I think the Fearless Girl adds meaning to the Charging Bull by showing the girl is strong and fearless also. Devon says, "The Fearless Girl takes away the meaning of the Charging Bull because the bull is standing up to a little little girl." "It makes the bull look mean."

I think it should stay because the bull still has its original meaning but it relates more to men. The little girl shows that women are strong and brave. With both in the same place, I see it to mean that women (as well as men) can be strong in a strong market.

The public has shown support to the Fearless girl by Kristian Visbal by signing a petition to keep it up for a year. Thousands of people from around the New York area have signed this petition. People liked this idea by sharing the idea on social media and quickly made it a hit. Many people also liked this sculpture because they thought it stood for woman empowerment. Di Modica who painted the Charging Bull believed that the fearless girl infringes copyright of his work. Modica thinks that the fearless girl is making his sculpted bull look like a villian. The girl is standing with her hands on her hip in front of the bull looking ready to take on it and the fearless girl is showing she's not afraid of the bull. The girl stands like a hero and the bulls look mean but with the girl in front of the bull makes Modica's painting look bad as if he feels. I think the bull and girls painting looks good together. I also think that the Fearless girls painting should move and it should be put right in front of it like it's blocking it or standing it off. Although it represents woman empowerment it also is not fair to di modica.

Sculpture Showdown Argument The public supported the Fearless Girl’s statue. New Yorker’s signed a petition to keep it for a year. The girl represents International Women’s day. Though this small statue caused a huge commotion, it also made a huge difference in artist Di Modica’s kindness. The girl represented the empowerment of women. Di Modica believes that Fearless Girl infringes on his copyright of Charging Bull. He thinks it makes the bull look like a villian. She’s standing like a superhero, which makes the bull look like a bad guy. The bull looks mean. The Fearless Girl should be moved. The Fearless Girl should absolutely be moved in the future. She completely makes the bull look awful. The girl herself completely defeats the original purpose of the bull. She should be put somewhere in New York with an extra bull.

Sculpture Showdown The public has shown support but signing a petition for a year for the Fearless Girl. The Fearless Girl symbolizes the empowerment of women. Also thousands of people signed the petition of the Fearless Girl. Artist Di Modica believes the Fearless Girl has infringes on his copyright of the Charging Bull because they put the Fearless Girl in front of his artwork which was there first. The Artist Di Modica says the bull symbolizes strength and prosperity but the Fearless Girl makes the bull look like a villain. The Artist of the Fearless Girl makes her look like an superhero by the way she is standing and presenting herself. The artist Di Modica also believes Fearless Girl exploits his work . The Fearless Girl should remain in the current location because it’s a free country and anything can be placed anywhere as long as the government signed off on it and them permission to put it there. I also believe that the Fearless Girl is standing up to the system because she probably is tired of the president messing up money and she was put there to stand up to him.

Sculpture Showdown By signing a petition for keeping the statue there for a year the public is showing support for the statue of the girl staying in it’s place. Signing the petition showed thousands of people cared for the statue. People in the public support the statue because they believe it supports the empowerment of women. The public also supports the statue because they believe it is there to celebrate international women’s day. The artist believes the statue of the girl makes his statue look like a villain. The way the girl is standing is making her look like a hero. The artist believes the girl’s position is changing the meaning behind his original sculpture. The bull was supposed to stand for strength and prosperity but now it looks like the bull is a by part to the girl. The fearless girl should not remain in the same spot. The statue looks good but the girl should move. I think you should respect the original. The artist does not own the street though so keeping the girl might not be the worst idea.

I believe the sculpture should be moved to a different location. The intent of the artist of the bull is compromised by the sculpture of the girl. It is true that he does not own the street, however he does own the rights to say what happens to the bull. The moving of the girl would be a compromise and secure the integrity of both artists and their work. If she wants to make a statement then she should create her own counter/antagonist character rather than destroy the intent of a fellow artist.
