No Selfie Sticks!
Many art museums are banning a popular device used to take self-portraits

Picture this: You’re admiring a painting at a museum, when suddenly a long, metal rod blocks your view. It’s a selfie stick—a pole-like device that attaches to a smartphone so people can extend their reach to take more flattering selfies. A group is using the gadget to snap a picture in front of the artwork. That’s when a guard approaches and points to a sign. It reads, “No Selfie Sticks Allowed.”

This scenario is playing out in art museums around the world. The popularity of selfie sticks has led many museums, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to the National Gallery in London, to add selfie sticks to their lists of banned items.

Museum officials worry that visitors wielding selfie sticks could accidently damage priceless works of art. The sticks may even encourage bad manners. Many say that the devices are distracting to other museumgoers. Plus, people too focused on using the sticks to achieve the best photos might miss out on the real purpose of visiting a museum—enjoying the artworks on display.

Not everyone is happy with the museums’ new anti-selfie-stick rules. Some say that selfie sticks are no different from outstretched arms taking regular selfies. And many museum officials agree that selfies are a good thing. People often share their photos on social media sites, which generates free publicity for museums. Taking selfies also helps people build lasting relationships with works of art. Since selfie sticks help people take better selfies, some think they should be allowed.

Though no museums have yet reported any negative incidents linked to selfie sticks, they’re taking preventive measures just in case. What do you think? Should museums allow selfie sticks?

CRAFT AN ARGUMENT
1. Why are some people worried about selfie sticks in art museums?
2. Why might taking selfies be a positive way for viewers to interact with artwork?
3. Should selfie sticks be allowed in museums?

I don't think museums should allow selfie sticks. Selfie sticks in a museum could be harmful. It could distract others who are their for the art. Disneyland even banned selfie sticks because people would take selfies on rides. Museums are like libraries people need peace and quiet when being in a museum to enjoy the art and other things there. That is why selfie sticks should be banned from museums.

1. " They think that the people might damage priceless art work, They might be distracting, and may encourage bad manners." 2. When they take selfies and post it on social media. " It might give the museum publicity. " It helps people build lasting relationships with works of art." 3. Yes, because they might help the museum get popular. So, people can have memories of the art work and the place.

I think that selfie sticks are a good way to modernize art museums without taking away the actual paintings. This is a way for people to interact with art.

I think that they should be banded every where.

I think that selfie sticks should be banned from places that are quiet and allow no cellphones

I think selfie sticks should not be allowed at museums because it could distract others who are there for the art. The person with the selfie stick could also be distracted and could possibly only focus on taking a good selfie with the art instead of actually examining the art and not posting it on social media. Plus, if it is posted on social media, anyone can see the art instead of actually going to the museum to see it in person. Yes, it might give the museum publicity and some people might get inspired to go to the museum, but some people are going to be to lazy and ask for more pictures. Plus, our modern day civilization has been way too focused on technology, and I think the artists would like them to put down the electronics and just appreciate their art.

NO I DONT THINK SELFIE STICKS SHOULD BE BAND BECAUSE PICTURES LIKE THAT MAKE MEMORIES OF WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN AND WHAT YOU HAVE DONE AND JUST YOUR ARM GOING UP IS NOT A VERY GOOD PICTURE AND IF SOMEONE NEEDS YOU TO MOVE THE STICK JUST ASK!!!!

I believe that if we had selfie sticks in the museum it would ruin the art by not understanding it and it would be a waste of time to bring them in if they haven't found out what the art truly means.

If people are walking past you and someone trips that would be bad. But you can see the art so much better.
Posted by: AlyssaB . | January 25, 2016 at 4:31 PM
People are worried of selfie sticks because of the distractions that come with the sticks. Nobody came to an art museum to look at someone taking "selfies." Although taking selfies with the art could actually help the museum. Possibly they could post that selfie on their Facebook and people might comment "OMG look at that piece of art it is sooooo fantabulous." So as you can see selfie sticks might actually do more good than harm. Like i said before it is free advertisement.

Some people think that it will distract people from the real art, but I think that selfie sticks are okay, but I rather have a phone or something else that's not so distracting to other people, but it would help to to get the whole picture of what your wanting.

I don't think that they should because it can be very distracting to the other people there. When people use selfie sticks it it takes away the beauty of the art. When people use them they don't really see the art because they are to busy taking pictures of themselves.

Selfie sticks can be disruptive and destructive. Some people are coming to the museum to admire and look at the art work, not be be running into selfie sticks left and right.

Some people are worried about selfie sticks in art museums because they can be distracting and they can get in the way of people wandering around enjoying the art. Selfie sticks do not belong in art museums.

1. I do not think selfie sticks are a problem. I think either way people will take selfies.
Posted by: Hanna M. | January 25, 2016 at 4:31 PM
I think that museums should allow selfies but not allow selfie sticks, because selfie sticks are very distracting and can be rude at some points. But having selfies I feel like is alright because when people take selfies they will be posted onto social media and BAM! free advertising for that museum, this in a way drawls people to go the museum.

Selfies, and therefore selfie sticks are part of our culture, especially for young people. Selfies create lasting memories and connections to art for that person and when selfies are posted to social media they create free publicity for museums. I don't think selfie sticks are more distracting than an outstretched arm or a large group picture, so I don't think selfie sticks should be banned.

3. I do not think selfie sticks are a problem in museums, in the sense that selfies will be taken either way because selfies are a thing of this generation. Either way, taking selfies in an art museum with the art is somewhat conceited because the purpose of the museum is to experience the art work, not yourself.
Posted by: Ray S. | January 25, 2016 at 4:31 PM
i think they should allow them because that is how th person communicates with the art
Posted by: javierM . | January 25, 2016 at 4:31 PM
I don't think selfie sticks are appropriate for museums. They are a distraction and overall danger to people and the artwork. What if someones swinging around their selfie stick and hits someone in the head or knocks down a piece of artwork? That would not be good, even though selfie sticks help you express yourself through pictures, its still not by any means appropriate for a museums. besides, if you want a picture from far a way, you could simply ask a family member, friend, or even a nice stranger to take the picture for you.

I do not think selfie sticks should be allowed in museums because people need to see what is in the museum and not at their face. Also people do not want other people taking pictures and getting in the way of them and the art. People do not go to the museum if people just stand in their way taking pictures.

I feel that selfie sticks are a distraction from the actual art work itself. You need to pay attention to the art, not the selfie you want to accomplish. You should be very proud to go to the art museum, so i feel you need to be aware of the paintings or statues, not yourself. If you want a picture of you with something have someone take it for you.
Posted by: Brooke P. | January 25, 2016 at 4:31 PM
I think selfie sticks are a useless phone accessory and they should have never been made.
Posted by: pATriCk B. | January 25, 2016 at 4:31 PM
I think selfie sticks are fine in some situations. If you can be responsible and respectful with them then they should be allowed. But if you are going disrupt everyone's experiments or whatever they are doing then no they shouldn't be allowed. so it just depends on the person to chose the right choice.
Posted by: Jasmine S. | January 25, 2016 at 4:32 PM
In my opinion it's a yes and no situation, some people would be responsible with them around the art work while others may use bad manners and may be careless with them around the artwork.
